DETROIT METROPOLITAN WAYNE COUNTY AIRPORT | NORTH TERMINAL GATES AND APRON EXPANSION

The North Terminal Gates and Apron Expansion project included the construction to two new airport gates as well as an apron for aircraft parking. This expansion will increase Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport’s flight capacity.

Jacobsen|Daniels was responsible for overseeing and managing the construction progress of this project. Additionally, Jacobsen|Daniels managed the sustainability efforts of this construction project to include submittal review to ensure the installation of energy efficiency products and construction and demolition debris waste tracking. This was a $24,000,000 effort broken up into 5 work packages:

  • Work Package #1 – Installation of 17” PCC, subgrade materials and drainage infrastructure
  • Work Package #2 – Terminal Improvements to install 3 passenger gates and surveillance equipment
  • Work Package #3 – Installation of new LED apron lighting on the North Terminal building
  • Work Package #4 – Procurement and installation of 3 new Passenger Boarding Bridges at the new gates
  • Work Package #5 – Installation of surveillance/security equipment to monitor aircraft movement from the ATCT at new Remain-Overnight (RON) aircraft parking spaces

Jacobsen|Daniels, as subcontractor to Mead & Hunt, provided:

  • Construction management services;
  • Daily construction inspections;
  • Waste management tracking and reporting;
  • Energy efficiency rebate program tracking and reporting.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Led coordination efforts for jet fuel piping installation and acceptance
  • Ensured that testing results were in compliance with the airport’s goals and design specifications
  • Managed installation of passenger boarding bridges between multiple vendors and contracts
  • Managed installation of LED lighting; installation was completed well under schedule
  • Oversaw a team of 5 inspectors responsible for monitoring multiple contractors during the installation of 27,000 cubic yards of aircraft rated pavement, drainage infrastructure and subgrade materials segmented into 3 phases of construction
