Jacobsen|Daniels and WHSmith North America introduce a pair of locally inspired, tech-forward experiences to DTW’s McNamara Terminal.

Romulus, MI – Jacobsen|Daniels (J|D), in partnership with WHSmith North America, announces the opening of Fuel Travel Shop and iStore at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). Located in the McNamara Terminal, the two retail stores reflect a shared commitment to enhancing the passenger journey through design, local identity, and innovation, in alignment with the Wayne County Airport Authority’s (WCAA) vision for DTW.
Fuel Travel Shop draws from Detroit’s automotive heritage, blending Detroit-inspired design with convenience retailing and a broad selection of travel essentials from reading materials, snacks, and quick-meal options to wellness items and local souvenirs. A visit to Fuel Travel Shop allows passengers the opportunity to take a piece of Detroit with them throughout their journey.
iStore is an interactive shopping experience combining modern technology with the latest fashion accessories. Designed for today’s connected traveler, the space features hands-on product displays and a curated mix of accessories and electronics from brands such as Apple, Beats, Samsung, and Sony.
Both experiences were delivered through a joint venture led by WHSmith North America, supported by local and Airport Concession Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (ACDBE) certified firms including J|D, Pady Regnier of Airport Retail Group, and Roslyn Karamoko of Détroit is the New Black. J|D’s role for both locations included retail merchandising and planning support, as well as construction management services.
J|D’s Director of Operations, Yolanda Woodruff, worked with local vendors to shape the retail experience. “We are proud to partner with WHSmith North America to introduce these concepts at DTW,” said Woodruff. “Fuel Travel Shop reflects Detroit’s character through its product mix, while iStore creates an interactive environment that supports how passengers move through their journey today.”
“These spaces are part of the passenger journey, so how they’re delivered matters just as much as how they look,” said Rick Flood, Vice President at J|D. “Delivering construction in an active airport environment requires precision, coordination, and an understanding of how each decision impacts operations and the traveler experience.” “Our role was to work with WCAA, the contractors, and the master concessionaire to bring both locations on seamlessly while maintaining quality and minimizing disruption.”
Fuel Travel Shop and iStore are in DTW’s McNamara Terminal near Gate A72 and Gate A53. Both locations are open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
