Q & A with Joe

What professional project are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my contribution as Construction Manager of the Denver Union Station project because it exemplifies the transformative power of infrastructure when executed with vision, precision, and collaboration. I helped deliver a $500 million multimodal transit hub that revitalized downtown Denver, integrating light rail, commuter rail, regional bus service, and public space into a cohesive, award-winning development. My leadership in coordinating complex construction activities and stakeholder relationships directly contributed to the project’s on-time, under-budget completion and its lasting impact on the city’s growth and connectivity.

What motivated you to pursue your career path?

I loved science, technology, engineering and mathematics before there was a STEM acronym for it. My AV drafting, auto shop and machine shop teacher in high school recognized this and encouraged me to pursue engineering in college, and I haven’t looked back since. I received my civil engineering degree from Colorado State University and have worked as a consultant and owner’s representative in various industries, mostly mass transit, in my 25+ years. I am most excited to see things get built and transform the communities where we live.

What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Phil Washington, the leader of RTD (now CEO of DEN), challenged us to be the “farm team” of the transit industry and encouraged us to build as much as we can, as fast we can. And we did, completing the FasTracks expansion program all over the Metro Denver area. Then he went on to lead the Los Angeles County Metro Transportation Authority and challenged the region to build 28 by 2028 (28 projects for the Olympics in 2028), and I followed him there and worked on the $9 billion Westside Purple Line Extension Program. Now I’m back in Colorado and still following his advice in the aviation industry where I am looking to help modernize the Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE) Airport.
